A comprehensive eye examination is important in the evaluation of your overall health. We believe in preventative eye care. A yearly eye examination is recommended to prevent any eye conditions and to monitor your complete health.
As a primary eye care provider, Dr. Kikunaga has the knowledge and expertise to diagnose, treat and manage a variety of ocular pathologies such as Macular Degeneration, Cataracts, and Dry Eye Syndrome. Systemic health conditions such as Diabetes and Hypertension can be detected simply with a comprehensive eye examination. If further general health treatment needs to be addressed, Dr. Kikunaga can coordinate proper treatment and management with your Primary Care Provider and even eye care specialists.
A major systemic disease that affects the eye is Diabetes. Diabetes mellitus is a group of diseases marked by high levels of blood glucose resulting from defects in insulin production, insulin action, or both. Diabetes can lead to serious complications, including potential blindness and premature death, but people with diabetes can take steps to control the disease and lower the risk of complications

Age 20 years or older: 20.6 million; 9.6 percent of all people in this age group have diabetes.
Age 60 years or older: 10.3 million; 20.9 percent of all people in this age group have diabetes.
Men: 10.9 million; 10.5 percent of all men aged 20 years or older have diabetes.
Women: 9.7 million; 8.8 percent of all women aged 20 years or older have diabetes.
• Diabetes is the leading cause of new cases of blindness among adults aged 20 to 74 years.
• Diabetic retinopathy causes 12,000 to 24,000 new cases of blindness each year.

It is highly recommended that if you have Diabetes (including pre-diabetic), you have a comprehensive eye examination once a year or sooner if recommended.
